Security Experts Warn VoIP Attacks May Be Just Around the Corner

It's become a familiar pattern in online security. A groundbreaking way to communicate emerges, spreads like wildfire, and then hackers find a way to use it to their advantage. Security companies react--but not before the problem has succeeded in wreaking havoc. It happened with e-mail and is happening now with instant messaging and mobile devices.

The next area that could be targeted: Voice over Internet Protocol, or VoIP, which lets people make low-priced phone calls using the same technology that delivers e-mail. And the results could be just as damaging, if not worse, than with other technologies, some security experts warn.

Survey Finds VOIP User Satisfaction Despite Some Disconnect

With voice over IP consumer usage poised to become a mass market, existing users are fairly satisfied with their service, according to a new survey released on May 31 by SupportSoft.

Sixty one percent of the 100 VOIP users subscribing to a cable-based service surveyed said that they are satisfied with their service, despite the finding that 34 percent of them had to have a technician come out within 90 days of the initial service installation because of a problem, and that 16 percent had to have a technician come out two or more times due to service problems.

Vonage and D-Link have teamed up to offer a co-branded Voice Terminal Adaptor, a two-line device that's designed for the Vonage service.
The deal marks the first collaboration between Vonage and D-Link. The VTA is available from retailers for a suggested price of $49.99, with a $40 rebate after 60 days of service. Users can also get the VTA for free when they sign up with Vonage on the Vonage web site.

BT to Set Up Wireless Broadband in Cities

BT Group plans to set up wide-area Wi-Fi networks in 12 cities by the end of the year, giving people access to the high-speed Internet and telecoms services when they are out and about.

The former telecoms monopoly said on Wednesday it would install a mesh of Wi-Fi hotspots covering large areas in Leeds, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Liverpool, Cardiff and London's Westminster area, in another push to boost revenues and set the stage for its next generation of mobile devices.

Americans Continue Buying Broadband at Record Pace

Americans continued to sign up for broadband -- both cable and DSL -- at record rates in the first quarter, according to a report from the Leichtman Research Group.

A total of 3.06 million net additional subscribers signed up for broadband in the quarter, bringing the total of high-speed Web subscribers to nearly 46 million. Nearly 25.8 million subscribers have cable, while DSL is used by about 20.2 million subscribers.

Net Neutrality Further Complicated by Opposition from Hardware Firms

The political debate in Washington over the concept known as Net neutrality just became a lot more complicated.

Some of the largest hardware makers in the world, including 3M, Cisco, Corning and Qualcomm, sent a letter to Congress on Wednesday firmly opposing new laws mandating Net neutrality -- the concept that broadband providers must never favor some Web sites or Internet services over others.

R.E.M. Joins Net Neutrality Debate

The band R.E.M. has joined a broadening coalition of people demanding that Congress pass a law to protect network neutrality.

R.E.M. is among a group of artists and musicians who have created their own petition requesting legislation they say would ensure that the Internet would remain a level playing field. More than 650,000 people have signed a petition supporting the legislation, while telecommunications companies push for a measure that would leave control in the hands of the Federal Communications Commission.

Storing VoIP Conversation along with Email as Next Regulation

IT chiefs have been warned to prepare for the possibility of new corporate governance rules that would require them to keep records of voice-over-IP (VoIP) conversations alongside email, instant messaging and other forms of communication.

Speaking at the Symantec user event in San Francisco last week, Jeremy Burton, a senior vice-president at the security specialist, said, "Financial institutions in the US already need to keep voicemail because it is stored on disk. As soon as the regulators figure out that VoIP is a digital stream, they will probably try to force that to be kept as well."

IPTV on Steady Rise with More Views and Channels

The number of viewers watching TV piped into homes over the internet is increasing as more broadcasters look to offer their content this way.

Research out today reveals the number of people downloading television content or watching it live online is growing rapidly in the UK. According to findings from Continental Research, 5.4 per cent of the UK population have watched IPTV. In total, 3.6 per cent have watched streamed live content and 3.3 per cent have watched a program that they have downloaded.

ICANN Approves .TEL Top-Level Domain

ICANN unanimously approved the creation of the new .Tel Top Level Domain (TLD) and awarded the contract to Telnic Limited.

"The .Tel domain offers the first genuinely different use of domains since .com was first created. It will provide seamless integration of existing methods of communication with emerging technologies like Voice over IP (VoIP). This places the .Tel domain at the core of the next phase of Internet development," said Khashayar Mahdavi, CEO of Telnic.

In-Flight VoIP Calling Bidding Underway

Like it or not, airline passengers in U.S. skies are likely to be listening to their fellow passengers talking on phones in a year or so. An FCC frequency auction underway this week will likely pave the way for VoIP calls in-flight.

Nine companies ranging from Verizon Communications' Airfone to JetBlue Airways are bidding for the frequencies. Airfone already offers phone service on many flights, but its high cost has limited its use. JetBlue has declined to say what its LiveTV LCC unit would do with a winning frequency.

IPTV equipment and service revenue is expected to hit $44 billion over the next three years, according to a new report by Infonetics Research.

The research firm said worldwide IPTV subscribers will climb to 53 million by 2009. To meet that demand, service providers are rapidly increasing their investments in infrastructure, transport and content.

Enterprise adoption of VoIP technology in North America will double by 2010, says a new survey by Infonetics Research. It found that almost half of small and two-thirds of large organizations in North America will be using VoIP products and services by 2010.

The primary reasons driving growth are the need to have an integrated phone system across multiple locations, scalability, operational cost savings, and the desire to converge voice and data networks.

Smaller Cable Companies Take Aim at Network Neutrality

Young, wealthy Internet companies like Google shouldn't expect to get "special favors" from network operators that have sunk billions of dollars into fiber investments, the head of a smaller cable company said Monday...

"I think what the phone industry's saying and what we're saying is we've made an investment, and I don't think the government should be coming and telling us how we can work that infrastructure, simple as that," Commisso said during a panel discussion about issues faced by companies like his, adding, "Why don't they go and tell the oil companies what they should charge for their damn gas?"

Verizon Warns Financial Sector of Network Neutrality

Verizon Communications warned the financial services industry may not get the secure networks it needs... "They are being fed a lot of cock-and-bull, Chicken Little stories about how the future of their industry is at stake because another network industry might have the freedom to price broadband services according to market demand," Verizon's chief congressional lobbyist Peter Davidson said in the memo.

He warned that the financial services industry "better not start moaning in the future about a lack of sophisticated data links they need" if Net neutrality laws were passed because the communications industry may not invest in new networks.
