Net Neutrality Concerns are 'Hypothetical', Says Verizon VP

C. Lincoln "Link" Hoewing, an assistant vice president at Verizon Communications, said that the ability to charge for services such as high-quality video is crucial to being able to afford the multibillion-dollar price tag of upgrading its network-to-fiber links.

"We could put other services on those pipes -- it's got a lot more capacity to do this," Hoewing told the Computers, Freedom and Privacy conference here. That would help "to make it more viable economically and financially and to help us compete." Calling concerns about Net-favoritism entirely hypothetical, Hoewing said: "I'm getting tired of it...We've never done anything that I know to interfere with anyone's traffic."

Security Professionals at Major Financial Institutions Shunning VoIP

Internet telephony is still not mature enough a platform to support business communications, according to senior security professionals.

In a debate at the Infosecurity conference in London last Wednesday, an audience of security and IT pros voted that Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) wasn't able to support mission critical communications at the moment. Banking security professionals argued that the expense of implementing current VoIP solutions coupled with the risk of security holes and network downtime did not make IP telephony an attractive business proposition.

Net Neutrality Bill Introduced in U.S. House of Representatives

After failing last week to add a provision to a telecommunications reform bill, four Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives on Tuesday introduced a free-standing bill aimed at preventing broadband carriers from discriminating against competing Web content or services.

The bill, sponsored by Representatives Ed Markey of Massachusetts, Jay Inslee of Washington state, Anna Eshoo of California and Rick Boucher of Virginia, would create a net neutrality law banning phone and cable companies from charging Web sites for faster data transmission, or blocking their online competitors' content and services. Senator Ron Wyden, an Oregon Democrat, has introduced a similar bill in the Senate.

VoIP Products Could Face Export Crackdown

The White House's decision seven years ago merely relaxed encryption rules in a few areas -- and thousands of pages of export regulations remain on the law books today.

Now some of these obscure export regulations are troubling companies that manufacture or support voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) products capable of draping a theoretically impenetrable cloak of encryption around every conversation.

VoIP Used in New Phishing Scam

Small businesses and consumers aren't the only ones enjoying the cost savings of switching to VoIP. According to messaging-security company Cloudmark, phishers have begun using the technology to steal personal and financial information over the phone.

Earlier this month, Cloudmark trapped an email phishing attack in its security filters that appeared to come from a small bank in a big city and directed recipients to verify their account information by dialing the included number. (The Cloudmark user who received the email and alerted the company knew it was a phishing scam, because he's not a customer at this bank.)

Net Neutrality Provision Rejected

Internet companies and consumer groups calling for a new U.S. law that would prohibit broadband providers from blocking or degrading some connections lost a major battle this week when a U.S. House of Representatives committee voted down such a provision.

The House Energy and Commerce Committee, during debate on a telecommunications reform bill, rejected an amendment that would write so-called net neutrality provisions into U.S. law. Backers of a net neutrality law want Congress to prohibit U.S. broadband providers from blocking or slowing their customers' connections to Web sites or services that compete with services offered by the providers.

Groups Join to Form Net Neutrality Coalition Taglined 'Save the Internet'

Days before a congressional committee is set to vote on an overhaul of the nation's telecommunications policy, a broad coalition of media, consumer and Internet groups has organized behind a dramatic tagline: "Save the Internet"

Dozens of organizations ranging from the conservative-to-libertarian Gun Owners of America to the liberal group Moveon.org to the American Library Association, have just launched a Web site under the "Save the Internet" banner. During a Monday press conference call, supporters of the newly minted group at times adopted the tone of a pep rally.

Survey Finds Women Far Less VoIP-Aware than Men

A recent HarrisInteractive survey about VoIP awareness in the U.S. and Britain found this intriguing fact: Men are more aware of VoIP than women by about a two-to-one margin...

The report found, "Women are far less likely than men to have heard about VoIP in both Great Britain (28% of women vs. 57% of men) and the United States (34% of women vs. 62% of men)."

Study Shows Iceland Having Highest Concentration of Broadband Users

The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development found that broadband was also widespread in South Korea, the Netherlands and Denmark.

But the US still has the most broadband users, with more than 49 million. Overall broadband subscriptions in OECD countries jumped from 136 million to 158 million in the six months to December 2005.

Why VOIP Needs Crypto

There are basically four ways to eavesdrop on a telephone call. One, you can listen in on another phone extension. Two, you can attach some eavesdropping equipment to the wire with a pair of alligator clips. Three, you can eavesdrop at the telephone switch. Four, you can tap the main trunk lines, eavesdrop on the microwave or satellite phone links, etc.

That's basically the entire threat model for traditional phone calls. ...Unfortunately, phone calls from your computer are fundamentally different from phone calls from your telephone. Internet telephony's threat model is much closer to the threat model for IP-networked computers than the threat model for telephony.

Republicans Turn Down Net Neutrality Proposal

A Republican-controlled House Energy and Commerce subcommittee on Wednesday defeated a proposal that would have levied extensive regulations on broadband providers and forcibly prevented them from offering higher-speed video services to partners or affiliates.

By an 8-to-23 margin, the committee members rejected a Democratic-backed "Net neutrality" amendment to a current piece of telecommunications legislation. The amendment had attracted support from companies including Amazon.com, eBay, Google, Microsoft and Yahoo, and their chief executives wrote a last-minute letter to the committee on Wednesday saying such a change to the legislation was "critical."
